Golden Paradise for Surfers Report by Louisa Mills for the Western Morning News, local daily paper for the whole of the West Country - article reproduced with their permission
This picturesque rural beach is a mile-wide stretch of golden sand backed by impressive and imposing high cliffs south of Bude in North Cornwall. Its high quality earned it a 2005 EnCams Seaside Award, getting the highest possible rating for water cleanliness. Its main, but by no means only, attraction is surfing - it has its own surf school and is recommended for beginners who can tackle some dramatic waves in safety away from dangerous rocks. Surfboards and other equipment can be hired at the beach or from the many surf shops in Bude, with lifeguards on duty over the summer months. As the name suggests, it is wide enough to cater for both surfers and swimmers, while other outdoor activities are on offer at the beach-side Outdoor Adventure Multi-activity and Surf Centre. Though it has less beach-side facilities than a Blue Flag beach, it does have the basics in a cafe, a toilet and plenty of car park space. Because it is easily accessible, it is very popular during the summer, but for the energetic or those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the busy beach, there are challenging coastal paths, from where you can walk into Bude or just take a moment to stop at the top and admire the view north and south along the coast almost as far as Tintagel, with the view especially breathtaking at sunset.
